Kublai Khan and the Yuan Dynasty

Kublai Khan, Genghis Khan's grandson, became Great Khan in 1260 and conquered China by 1279. He established the Yuan Dynasty (1279-1368), bringing China into a time of peace and prosperity. Unlike previous conquerors, Kublai adopted many Chinese customs and built his capital at Beijing.

Not all of Kublai's military campaigns succeeded, though. He attempted to invade Japan twice (1274 and 1281), but both attempts failed. The second massive invasion was dramatically destroyed by a typhoon, which the Japanese called "kamikaze" or "divine wind."

The Mongols maintained separation between themselves and the Chinese population. They kept top government positions for Mongols while allowing Chinese to serve in local roles. Despite this division, Kublai improved infrastructure by extending the Grand Canal to Beijing and building highways throughout China.

Did you know? Under Kublai Khan's rule, foreign trade flourished as never before. He actively invited international merchants to China, which helped spread Chinese goods and culture throughout Asia and beyond.

Marco Polo and the End of Mongol Rule

Marco Polo, a Venetian trader, visited China in 1275 and stayed for nearly 17 years before returning to Venice in 1292. His stories about China amazed Europeans with descriptions of fabulous cities, incredible wealth, and innovations like burning "black stones" (coal) to heat homes. Though compiled into a popular book, many readers at the time doubted these tales were true.

Mongol power began declining after Kublai's death in 1294. Failed military expeditions to Southeast Asia revealed weaknesses in the Yuan Dynasty, while high taxes caused growing resentment among the Chinese population. Weak successors couldn't maintain control, and rebellions in the 1300s eventually led to the formation of the Ming Dynasty.

The collapse of Mongol rule wasn't limited to China. Their power crumbled in Persia during the 1300s and in Central Asia by the 1370s. By century's end, only the Golden Horde in Russia remained of the once-mighty Mongol Empire that had stretched across much of Asia.

Important connection: Marco Polo's writings, though questioned at the time, provided Europeans with their first detailed descriptions of East Asia and sparked interest in trade with China that would eventually lead to the Age of Exploration.

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
