Causes of WWI: The M.A.I.N Factors
Ever wondered what could cause a worldwide war? The answer lies in the M.A.I.N factors. Militarism meant countries were building stronger armies with better weapons. Alliances formed as nations partnered for protection. Imperialism created tension as powerful countries took over weaker ones. And Nationalism drove intense pride that made countries willing to fight.
Two major alliance systems emerged: the Triple Alliance later called the "Central Powers" when Bulgaria joined, and the Triple Entente (Great Britain, France, Russia) which became the "Allied Powers" with Serbia and eventually the United States.
The Balkans region in southeastern Europe was especially troubled. Countries like Serbia, Bulgaria, and Bosnia had been fighting over borders for centuries. Serbia and Austria-Hungary both wanted control of Bosnia, creating dangerous tensions between them.
History Flashpoint! The spark that lit the war came on June 28, 1914, when a Serbian nationalist group called the "Black Hand" assassinated Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This single event would cascade into a global conflict.

From Assassination to American Involvement
World War I officially began on July 28, 1914, just one month after the assassination. The Western Front became a 500-mile battle line stretching across Europe where most fighting occurred. One major conflict centered on the Alsace-Lorraine region, which had valuable factories and resources that France and Germany had fought over for centuries.
Germany's plan was to quickly defeat France first, then turn to fight Russia. This strategy failed, forcing Germany into a challenging two-front war that stretched their military thin. Meanwhile, the United States stayed neutral at first but eventually joined the Allied Powers after fighting for 19 months.
America finally entered the war because of several factors: cultural connections to Britain, profitable trade with France, German attacks on ships (including the Lusitania where 128 Americans died), and the infamous Zimmermann Telegram—where Germany secretly offered to help Mexico reclaim Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico if they attacked the U.S.
Tech Talk: WWI introduced deadly new military technology! The National War Labor Board directed American production of machine guns, poison gas, tanks, planes, and submarines. Germany's U-boats (submarines) were especially feared as they could sink ships without warning.
