U.S. States and Capitals

The United States consists of 50 states, each with its own capital city. Knowing these states and capitals helps you understand U.S. geography and political organization.

From Alabama to Wyoming, each state has a unique capital that serves as its governmental center. Some capitals are famous big cities like Boston (Massachusetts), while others might surprise you, like Albany (New York) instead of New York City.

Many state capitals aren't the largest or most well-known cities in their states. For example, Sacramento is California's capital (not Los Angeles), and Springfield is Illinois' capital (not Chicago).

Fun Fact: Carson City (Nevada), Montpelier (Vermont), and Pierre (South Dakota) are among the smallest state capitals by population!

When memorizing these states and capitals, try organizing them by region (Northeast, South, Midwest, West) or alphabetically. Creating memorable associations or using flashcards can make learning these locations much easier!
