What is Physics?
Physics is the science that explains how our universe operates. It focuses on four main concepts: matter, energy, force, and motion - basically everything that makes up our world and how it all interacts!
Matter and energy are fundamental to physics. Matter is everything that takes up space, while energy is what causes change to happen. The cool thing is that matter can transform into energy (and vice versa) as shown in Einstein's famous equation E=mc².
Force and motion are connected concepts you experience every day. Force is simply a push or pull that happens when objects interact with each other. Motion describes how an object's position changes over time - like when you ride your bike or throw a ball.
Fun Fact: Every single time you push or pull something, that object is pushing or pulling back on you with equal force - this becomes important when we learn about Newton's laws!

Newton's Laws and Gravity
Newton's Laws of Motion explain how objects behave when forces act on them. The First Law (inertia) tells us that objects want to keep doing what they're already doing - staying still or moving in a straight line - unless something pushes or pulls them.
The Second Law shows that acceleration depends on force and mass. Push harder on something and it accelerates more, but heavier objects need more force to get moving. Think about how much harder it is to push a shopping cart when it's full versus empty!
The Third Law states that for every action force, there's an equal and opposite reaction force. When you jump, you push down on the ground, and the ground pushes back up on you with equal force!
Gravity is the force that pulls objects toward each other. The strength of gravity depends on mass and distance - the more massive objects are and the closer they are, the stronger the gravitational pull between them.

Energy and Waves
Energy exists in many different forms that you encounter daily. Kinetic energy is in anything that's moving, while potential energy is stored (like in a stretched rubber band). Other forms include thermal (heat), chemical (in food and batteries), and electrical energy.
The Conservation of Energy law is one of physics' most important principles. Energy never disappears or appears from nowhere - it just changes form or transfers between objects. When you charge your phone, electrical energy transforms into chemical energy stored in the battery.
Waves are disturbances that carry energy from place to place. Think of dropping a pebble in water and watching the ripples spread. Sound is a special type of wave created by vibrations that travel through air, water, or solids to reach our ears.
Try This: Next time you hear sound, remember you're detecting invisible waves of energy that traveled from their source to your ear!

Light and the Electromagnetic Spectrum
Light is energy that can travel through empty space. Unlike sound, it doesn't need a medium to move through, which is why we can see stars even though space is mostly empty!
The electromagnetic spectrum includes all types of electromagnetic radiation, organized by wavelength and frequency. This includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared, visible light, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays - all the same type of energy just with different properties.
Visible light is just a tiny portion of this spectrum that our eyes can detect. The different wavelengths within visible light appear as different colors, from red (longest wavelength) to violet (shortest wavelength).
Mind-Blowing Fact: The light you see from some stars has been traveling for millions of years through space before reaching your eyes!
