Calculating Discounts & Markups

Ever wonder how to figure out sale prices? A discount is when the price goes DOWN from the original price, while a markup is when a store increases the price from what they paid (price goes UP).

There are two ways to solve these problems. First, you can find the discount amount and subtract it from the original price. For example, if shorts originally cost $35 with a 25% discount, you calculate 25% of $35 = $8.75, then subtract to get $26.25.

The second way is faster - just multiply by the remaining percentage. For the same shorts, 100% - 25% = 75%, so you calculate 75% of $35 = $26.25 and get the same answer!

Helpful Tip: When you need to find the original price from a sale price, divide the sale price by the remaining percentage (as a decimal). For example, if shoes are 40% off and now cost $33, the remaining percentage is 60%. So $33 ÷ 0.60 = $55 original price.

Working with Multiple Percentage Changes

When stores mark up items, they add a percentage to their cost. If a store pays $70 for a bicycle and adds a 20% markup, they'll find 20% of $70 = $14, then add that to get $84 selling price. A quicker way is calculating 120% of $70 = $84.

Discounts can be applied multiple times. For a $129.50 stereo with a 40% discount, the first sale price is $77.70. If there's another 60% off that price, you'd calculate 40% of $77.70 = $31.08. The stereo isn't free - it's $31.08!

Remember that tax gets added after discounts. For jeans that normally cost $39.99 with a 25% discount, first calculate the sale price: 75% of $39.99 = $29.99. Then add tax: 106.5% of $29.99 = $31.94 total.

Quick Trick: Draw a plus sign (+) next to markup or tax calculations to remember you're adding them, and a minus sign (-) next to discount calculations to remember you're subtracting.
