Bilimsel gösterimde a × 10ⁿ formatını kullanırız. Burada "a" sayısı 1'den büyük veya eşit, 10'dan küçük olmalıdır. "n" ise tam sayıdır.

0,0000021 sayısını ele alalım. Virgülü sağa kaydırarak 2,1 × 10⁻⁶ şeklinde yazarız. Her sağa kayış için kuvvet bir azalır (daha negatif olur).
Örneklere bakalım: 0,008 = 8 × 10⁻³ ve 0,0000076 = 7,6 × 10⁻⁶ şeklinde yazılır. Sıfır sayısı ne kadar çok olursa kuvvet o kadar negatif olur.
