Sentence Structure & Questions

Building sentences in Irish follows a clear pattern: Verb + Person + Object + Everything Else. Once you get this structure down, you'll find Irish much easier to handle.

Question words are your best friends for starting conversations. Cathain (when), Cá/Car (where), Cad/Céard (what), and Cé (who) will help you ask about anything. Remember that questions often trigger séimhiú (adding 'h') or urú (changing consonants).

Emotions use a special pattern: "Tá [emotion] orm" (I am [emotion]). So "Tá brón orm" means "I am sad", while "Tá áthas orm" means "I am happy". This literally translates as "sadness/happiness is on me" - it's just how Irish works!

Telling time uses fractions: ceathrú tar éis (quarter past), leathuair tar éis (half past), and ceathrú chun (quarter to). The Irish clock system becomes natural with practice.

Remember: Irish sentence structure is actually quite logical once you learn the verb-first pattern!

The Basics - Numbers, Days & Actions

Numbers in Irish have two systems you need to know. Basic counting (aon, dó, trí) and personal numbers for people (duine, beirt, triúr). Use personal numbers when counting people - it's not optional!

Days of the week all start with "An" and months follow predictable patterns. Colours are straightforward, but remember they can change form when describing things (that's the adjective agreement rule at work).

The present continuous shows what's happening right now. "Cad atá tú ag déanamh?" (What are you doing?) followed by "ag + verbal noun" tells you exactly what someone's up to. So "ag léamh" (reading), "ag scríobh" (writing), "ag imirt" (playing).

Time expressions like amárach (tomorrow), inné (yesterday), and anois (now) help you talk about when things happen. These are essential for telling stories and describing your day.

Pro Tip: Personal numbers are used far more often than you'd think - master beirt, triúr, and ceathrar first!

Descriptive Language & Useful Phrases

Adjectives in Irish pack real punch when you know how to intensify them. Adding an- makes things "very" (an-mhór = very big), while ró means "too" (rómhór = too big). Both cause séimhiú (adding h).

Connecting words like agus (and), ach (but), mar (because) help you build complex sentences. Time connectors such as ar dtús (first), ansin (then), ar deireadh (finally) make your Irish flow naturally.

Useful phrases for giving opinions include "Ceapaim go..." (I think that...), "Tá súil agam" (I hope), and "Gan amhras" (without doubt). These make you sound much more fluent and confident.

Remember that adjectives follow nouns in Irish, so it's "teach mór" (big house), not "mór teach". The adjective also changes to match the noun's gender and case, but don't worry about perfecting this immediately.

Language Hack: Learn phrases like "Chun na fírinne a rá" (to tell the truth) - they make your Irish sound natural and conversational!

Grammar Essentials - Séimhiú, Urú & Possessives

Séimhiú (adding 'h') happens constantly in Irish, triggered by possessive adjectives, certain prepositions, and after an (the) with feminine nouns. Don't memorise every rule - just notice the patterns as you encounter them.

Urú (initial mutations like 'mb' for 'b') looks scary but follows predictable rules. It happens after ár, bhur, and a (their), plus with certain prepositions. Think of it as Irish's way of showing relationships between words.

Possessive adjectives change depending on what follows them. Mo and do add séimhiú before consonants but become m' and d' before vowels. A (his) adds séimhiú, while a (her) doesn't - context tells you which is which.

Prepositional pronouns combine prepositions with pronouns into single words. Agam (at me/I have), liom (with me), uaim (from me) are essential for everyday conversation. They look complex but become automatic with practice.

Memory Trick: Think of séimhiú and urú as Irish's way of making words flow together smoothly - it's about sound, not just grammar rules!

Verbs - The Heart of Irish

Irish verbs follow two main conjugations, but the patterns are quite regular once you spot them. First conjugation verbs (like bris, cuir, dún) and second conjugation verbs (like bailigh, éirigh, oscail) each have their own endings.

The three tenses you need most are past (what happened), present (what happens regularly), and future (what will happen). Past tense often adds séimhiú, present tense uses an + urú for questions, and future tense is surprisingly regular.

Irregular verbs like bí (be), déan (do/make), feic (see), and téigh (go) appear constantly, so learn them well. They're irregular because they're so commonly used that they've worn down over centuries of speaking.

Tá, bíonn, and is all mean "be" but work differently. Tá describes temporary states, bíonn describes permanent habits, and is identifies what something essentially is. This distinction matters for sounding natural.

Verb Strategy: Focus on getting the common irregular verbs automatic first - they appear in almost every conversation!

Personal Information & Daily Life

Talking about yourself uses predictable question and answer patterns. "Cad is ainm duit?" (What's your name?), "Cén aois thú?" (What age are you?), and "Cá bhfuil tú i do chónaí?" (Where do you live?) form the foundation of most conversations.

Family vocabulary extends beyond immediate relatives to include aintín (aunt), uncail (uncle), and col ceathrar (cousin). Don't forget profession vocabulary - múinteoir (teacher), dochtúir (doctor), feirmeoir (farmer) come up constantly.

Weather descriptions in Irish are wonderfully expressive. "Tá sé ag cur báistí" (it's raining) literally means "it's throwing rain", while "Tá sé ag spalpadh anuas" (it's lashing down) shows Irish's colourful approach to describing the elements.

House vocabulary covers everything from teach dhá stór (two-storey house) to specific rooms like seomra folctha (bathroom) and seomra spraoi (playroom). Learning these helps you describe your environment accurately.

Conversation Starter: Master weather talk first - it's how most Irish conversations begin, and you'll use it every day!

School, Clothes & Food

School vocabulary goes beyond subject names to include practical terms like seomra ranga (classroom), clós (schoolyard), and príomhoide (principal). These help you discuss your daily school experience in detail.

Clothing descriptions use the pattern "Tá ___ orm/air/uirthi" (I'm/he's/she's wearing). Remember that oireann dom (suits me) and ní oireann dom (doesn't suit me) help you express fashion opinions. Faiseanta (fashionable) and compordach (comfortable) are essential adjectives.

Food vocabulary covers everything from bricfeasta (breakfast) through to dinnéar (dinner). Learn both the food items themselves and cooking methods - ubh bhruite (boiled egg) versus ubh fhriochta (fried egg) shows the detail Irish provides.

Expressing preferences uses patterns like "Is fearr liom..." (I prefer), "Is breá liom..." (I love), and "Is fuath liom..." (I hate). These phrases work with any topic, not just food.

Daily Practice: Try describing what you're wearing and eating each day - it's perfect for building vocabulary naturally!

Hobbies, TV & Shopping

Hobby vocabulary helps you express interests and abilities. "Bainim taitneamh as..." (I enjoy) and "Tá mé go maith ag..." (I'm good at) let you talk confidently about your skills. Sports terminology covers everything from peil ghaelach (Gaelic football) to snámh (swimming).

TV and entertainment vocabulary reflects modern life with terms like fón cliste (smartphone), táibléad (tablet), and scáileán mór (big screen). Programme types like sobalchlár (soap opera) and cartún (cartoon) help you discuss your viewing habits.

Shopping language uses polite patterns like "Ba mhaith liom... a cheannach" (I would like to buy) and "An féidir liom cabhrú leat?" (Can I help you?). Money vocabulary includes practical terms like sóinseáil (change) and díolachán (sale).

Frequency expressions such as "gach uile lá" (every day), "dhá uair sa tseachtain" (twice a week), and "uair nó dhó sa mhí" (once or twice a month) help you describe how often you do activities.

Real-World Tip: Practice shopping phrases even if you're not buying anything - the politeness patterns work in many different situations!
