The Atmosphere and Uneven Heating
Ever wonder why some places are scorching hot while others are freezing cold? It's all about how the atmosphere - that thin layer of gases surrounding Earth - distributes heat from the sun.
The atmosphere has different layers, with the troposphere being the lowest one where all our weather happens. Above that sits the stratosphere, which contains the important ozone layer that protects us from harmful sun rays.
Latitude plays a huge role in temperature differences. Because Earth is round, the equator gets direct sunlight whilst places closer to the poles get slanted rays spread over a larger area. That's why tropical countries are hot and polar regions stay cold!
The Earth's tilt on its axis gives us our seasons. During summer in Ireland, the northern hemisphere tilts towards the sun, giving us longer days and warmer weather. In winter, we tilt away, resulting in shorter days and colder temperatures.
Remember: The closer you are to the equator, the hotter it gets because the sun's rays have less distance to travel!
