Dilatación Térmica: Tipos y Cálculos

La dilatación térmica se clasifica en tres tipos principales: dilatación lineal (cambio en longitud), dilatación superficial (cambio en área) y dilatación volumétrica (cambio en volumen). Cada tipo afecta a los materiales de manera diferente según sus propiedades.

Para calcular la dilatación lineal usamos la fórmula: ΔL = α × Lo × ΔT, donde α es el coeficiente de expansión térmica, Lo es la longitud inicial, y ΔT representa el cambio de temperatura. Recuerda que ΔT = Tf - To y ΔL = Lf - Lo, siendo "f" final y "o" inicial.

Diferentes materiales tienen distintos coeficientes de expansión térmica. Por ejemplo, el aluminio (24×10⁻⁶) se expande más que el acero (11×10⁻⁶) ante el mismo cambio de temperatura. El vidrio Pyrex (3,2×10⁻⁶) tiene un coeficiente bajo, lo que explica por qué es ideal para cocina.

💡 ¡Dato útil! El Invar, una aleación de níquel y hierro, tiene un coeficiente de expansión térmica extremadamente bajo (0,9×10⁻⁶), por eso se usa en instrumentos de precisión donde los cambios dimensionales serían problemáticos.
