Minerals and Rock Formation

Sedimentary rocks like limestone develop when layers of material settle and compress over time. Metamorphic rocks like soapstone result when existing rocks transform under heat and pressure.

Each method comes with its own set of environmental challenges.
The environmental costs of mining are significant. These include increased erosion, sediment and debris accumulation, water pollution, and air pollution. To address these concerns, laws like the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 require companies to restore mined lands rather than abandoning them after extraction.
