Chapters 1-3: Setting the Stage

Chapters 4-6: Dreams and Tragedy
Chapter 4 explores isolation through Crooks, the Black stable hand who lives separately from the others. When Lennie visits him, Crooks initially mocks Lennie's dream but gradually becomes interested. Curley's wife interrupts their conversation, revealing her own loneliness and dreams of being in movies.
In the tragic Chapter 5, Lennie accidentally kills his puppy by petting it too hard. When alone with Curley's wife, she invites him to touch her soft hair, but Lennie's strength leads to disaster – he unintentionally breaks her neck when she panics. Candy discovers her body and blames her for ruining their dream of buying land.
The final chapter shows George finding Lennie at their predetermined hiding spot. In a mercy killing that mirrors Carlson's shooting of Candy's dog, George shoots Lennie while describing their dream farm one last time. He later tells the others that he wrestled the gun from Lennie and shot him in self-defense.
