Parts of Speech

The English language has eight main parts of speech that work together to create meaningful sentences. Let's break them down:

Nouns are words that name people, places, things, or ideas. They can be common (book, love) or proper nouns which name specific things and always start with capital letters (Hailey, Arizona, Statue of Liberty).

Pronouns take the place of nouns so we don't have to repeat the same noun over and over. Examples include he, she, they, and them. Using pronouns makes your writing flow better!

Verbs are the action words of language. They come in three types: action verbs show what the subject is doing (run, scream), linking verbs connect subjects to their descriptions (is, was), and helping verbs support other verbs (should have, was).

Pro Tip: When you're trying to identify parts of speech in a sentence, start by finding the verbs first. Once you know the action, it's easier to figure out who's doing it (noun) and how they're doing it (adverbs).

Adjectives describe nouns and make your writing more colorful (wise, beautiful, red), while adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs (quickly, well, softly).

Prepositions show relationships involving space or time (in, above, before, across), and conjunctions join words or groups of words together—remember FANBOYS (For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So). Finally, interjections express sudden emotions (Oh no!, What?!, Wait!).
