Understanding Adjectives

Adjectives are words that describe or modify nouns and pronouns in a sentence. They tell us about the characteristics, qualities, or features of people, places, or things. When you use adjectives, your language becomes more expressive and detailed.

There are different types of adjectives you'll use in your writing. Descriptive adjectives like "red," "happy," or "tall" directly describe nouns. Proper adjectives come from proper nouns, such as "American" or "Shakespearean." And don't forget articles ("a," "an," "the"), which are technically adjectives too!

You can place adjectives in various positions in a sentence. Most commonly, they appear before the noun ("the fast car"), after linking verbs like "be," "seem," or "look" ("The car is fast"), or in combinations ("the bright yellow car"). Adjectives also change forms to show comparison—like "faster" and "fastest."

Quick Tip: When using multiple adjectives together, there's actually a specific order that sounds natural to English speakers: opinion, size, age, shape, color, origin, material, purpose. For example: "A beautiful large ancient round blue French glass vase."
