Measurements and the Metric System
Ever wonder why scientists don't just use random units to measure things? That's because a measurement is more than just a number—it includes both a quantity and a unit. The metric system provides standardized units that scientists worldwide use to communicate clearly.
Different physical properties require different measuring tools. We measure mass (amount of matter) in grams using a balance, volume (space an object takes up) in liters with graduated cylinders, and distance in meters with meter sticks. For temperature, we use thermometers to measure in Kelvin (°K), converting from Celsius by adding 273. This eliminates negative values that might complicate calculations.
The metric system uses prefixes to indicate size. Moving up the scale, we have prefixes like kilo- (1,000×) and mega- (1,000,000×). Moving down, we use prefixes like centi- (0.01×) and milli- (0.001×). When dealing with very large or small numbers, we convert to scientific notation by moving the decimal point until just one digit remains to the left, then noting the power of 10 (move left: exponent increases; move right: exponent decreases).
Pro Tip: When converting between metric units, you're just multiplying or dividing by powers of 10. Moving three places right on the prefix chart? Divide by 1,000. Moving two places left? Multiply by 100.
