Understanding Cellular Respiration
Your cells are constantly working like tiny factories, and respiration is their way of converting glucose from food into ATP - the energy molecule that powers everything you do. It's an enzyme-controlled process that happens in every single cell in your body.
There are two main types of respiration: aerobic respiration (which uses oxygen) and anaerobic respiration (which doesn't need oxygen). Most of the time, your cells prefer the aerobic route because it's much more efficient.
The basic equation for aerobic respiration shows glucose plus oxygen creating carbon dioxide, water, and energy: C₆H₁₂O₆ + 6O₂ → 6CO₂ + 6H₂O + ATP. The process happens in two distinct stages - first breaking glucose down into smaller molecules with a small energy release, then completely breaking those down for a massive energy boost.
Quick Tip: Remember that respiration isn't just breathing - that's ventilation. Respiration is what happens inside your cells!
