Meiosis and Crossing Over

Meiosis has two main divisions. Meiosis I starts with one cell and ends with two cells. During this first division, chromosomes line up in pairs - this is different from mitosis where they line up individually. Meiosis II then starts with those 2 cells and ends with 4 unique cells.
What makes these final cells unique? Two key processes: crossing over and independent assortment. Crossing over happens when chromosome pairs exchange genetic material, creating new combinations of genes. This genetic shuffling is why siblings (except identical twins) look different from each other.
