Photosynthesis: Light-Dependent and Light-Independent Reactions

Ever wonder how plants turn sunlight into energy? The process happens in two distinct stages that work together. Let's break it down!

The light-dependent reactions occur in the thylakoid membrane of chloroplasts. When sunlight strikes this membrane, it triggers a process called photolysis where water molecules split into oxygen and hydrogen. During this phase, the plant converts ADP to ATP (energy) and NADP+ to NADPH (stored hydrogen). The oxygen gets released as a waste product—the oxygen we breathe!

💡 Think of light-dependent reactions as the "energy harvesting" phase—capturing sunlight and converting it to chemical energy (ATP and NADPH) that the plant can actually use.

The light-independent reactions (Calvin Cycle) happen in the stroma of chloroplasts. Here, plants use the ATP and NADPH from the light reactions to convert carbon dioxide into glucose. During carbon fixation, CO₂ from the air attaches to a 5-carbon sugar, starting a series of transformations that eventually produce glucose. This process doesn't directly require light, but it depends on the products from the light-dependent reactions.

These two processes work together like a well-oiled machine. The light reactions capture energy, and the Calvin Cycle uses that energy to make food for the plant. You've just learned the fundamental process that powers almost all life on Earth!

The app is very easy to use and well designed. I have found everything I was looking for so far and have been able to learn a lot from the presentations! I will definitely use the app for a class assignment! And of course it also helps a lot as an inspiration.

This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
