This process is reversible through hydrolysis, where water molecules break the bonds between monomers. These opposing reactions maintain balance in biological systems and are crucial for processes like digestion and energy storage.
The structure and function of nucleic acids, particularly DNA and RNA, depend on their nucleotide components. Each nucleotide contains a phosphate group, sugar molecule, and nitrogenous base. The bases are divided into two categories: purines (adenine and guanine) and pyrimidines (cytosine, thymine, and uracil). Understanding these components is crucial for grasping concepts like DNA replication and protein synthesis. The four major types of biological macromolecules - proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, and nucleic acids - each serve distinct functions in organisms. Proteins act as enzymes and structural components, carbohydrates provide energy, lipids form cell membranes and store energy, and nucleic acids carry genetic information. These molecules interact through complex biochemical pathways that maintain life processes.
