Right Triangles and the Pythagorean Theorem
A right triangle has one 90-degree angle (the right angle). What makes these triangles special is the relationship between their sides, described by the Pythagorean Theorem.
The Pythagorean Theorem states that in a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides. If we call the hypotenuse c and the other sides a and b, then: a² + b² = c². The hypotenuse is always the longest side and sits opposite the right angle.
Let's see this in action! If a right triangle has sides of 3 and 4 units, we can find the hypotenuse by plugging into our formula: 3² + 4² = c². That's 9 + 16 = 25, so c = 5. The sides 3-4-5 form a perfect right triangle.
Try This! The Pythagorean Theorem is everywhere in our world. Next time you're in a park, try measuring the diagonal distance across a rectangular field using this formula instead of walking the whole way!

Applications and Pythagorean Triples
The Pythagorean Theorem isn't just for finding missing sides—it can also tell us if a triangle is a right triangle! If three sides of a triangle satisfy a² + b² = c², then it must have a right angle. This is called the Converse of the Pythagorean Theorem.
For example, if someone gives you a triangle with sides 5, 12, and 13, you can check: 5² + 12² = 25 + 144 = 169, and 13² = 169. Since they're equal, this must be a right triangle!
Some sets of three whole numbers perfectly satisfy the Pythagorean Theorem. These are called Pythagorean triples. The most famous is 3-4-5, but there are infinitely many others like 5-12-13, 8-15-17, and 7-24-25.
Math Hack: You can generate your own Pythagorean triples using the formula: a = m²-n², b = 2mn, and c = m²+n², where m and n are positive integers with m > n.
