Formation of Precipitation

Water cycles through our atmosphere based on humidity - the concentration of water vapor in the air. Warmer air can hold more water vapor than cooler air. When air contains all the moisture it can possibly hold at a given temperature, it's saturated (100% relative humidity).

There are two important ways to measure moisture in air. Absolute humidity measures the total mass of water vapor in a given volume of air g/m3g/m³. More useful for weather forecasting is relative humidity (RH), which compares the current moisture to what the air could hold at saturation, expressed as a percentage. When air reaches its dew point temperature, it becomes saturated and condensation begins - this is when clouds form!

Weather Insight: The "muggy" feeling on humid days happens because sweat can't evaporate easily from your skin when the air already contains lots of moisture!

Precipitation forms in three main patterns. Orographic rainfall occurs when air is forced up over mountains, cooling it until condensation happens. This creates rainy conditions on one side and a dry "rain shadow" on the other. Cyclonic rainfall results when warm air masses meet cold air and are forced upward, creating frontal rain. Convectional rainfall happens when ground heat causes air to rise rapidly, cool, and form intense thunderstorms.

Globally, precipitation follows predictable patterns. The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) near the equator creates heavy rainfall (>2000mm yearly) that sustains tropical rainforests. High-pressure desert regions receive minimal precipitation (<250mm yearly) because air descends and warms. Mid-latitude areas typically receive about 1000mm yearly from depression rainfall where polar and tropical air masses meet.

Precipitation takes many forms including rain, drizzle, snow, sleet, hail, and dew. All forms follow the same basic process: air becomes saturated, cools to dew point, condensation occurs, clouds form, and finally, precipitation falls to Earth.

This app is really great. There are so many study notes and help [...]. My problem subject is French, for example, and the app has so many options for help. Thanks to this app, I have improved my French. I would recommend it to anyone.

Wow, I am really amazed. I just tried the app because I've seen it advertised many times and was absolutely stunned. This app is THE HELP you want for school and above all, it offers so many things, such as workouts and fact sheets, which have been VERY helpful to me personally.
